PHPAskIt 3.0

1st March 2007 / 18:01

Tagged: CMS, Geekiness, PHP, PHPAskIt, Scripts, Site, Spam

...is in the works.

Any feature requests or improvements that you would like to see in the new version?

So far, version 3 contains the following new features:

  • Customisation through templates
  • User-end searching
  • Automatic WordPress configuration

As well as the following improvements:

  • Summary by category now optional
  • "Sort alphabetically by category" option removed, though individual category sorting still remains
  • Better URL structure
  • faq.php removed - index.php is now the main page
  • Improved login security
  • Complete code rewrite, now uses Object Oriented Programming
  • New database structure for improved performance

Anyone want anything else?

Also, a new version of NL-PHPMail has been released (2.2), so you should all go and download it right now. Yes.

In other coding-related news, I have successfully managed to integrate Akismet into my CMS. I think it's all working properly, and besides a few problems the other day when either everything was spam or everything was ham (not spam), it seems to be working now and genuine comments are being let through while spammy ones are not. Not that I've had any spam while using this CMS yet, but I'm sure I will.

3.0, yay! Hmmm....I can't really think of any new features off the top of my head that I'd like. It's working just perfectly for me right now, script-wise!

Auto WP configuration sounds cool. It's playing nicely with my WP installation! The only thing that it isn't compatible with, which is fine I don't mind, is a new plugin I installed for breadcrumbs. It doesn't grab the correct titles, but I don't mind so much about that. The script works too well for me to complain! XD

    Woot! ^_^

I can't think of any features, either, but I can't wait for it to come out!

Currently the admin panel doesn't look so good, although, that could be a me thing, and not a script thing, so that would be good.

I'm glad that there's no more faq.php because I always forget all of the changes that I make to a script and trying to remember after upgrade gets tiring. Esp. since I don't want to use categories.

The admin panel has just had a complete reworking :) I agree with you though - I wasn't happy with how it looked ever since the very beginning.

Completely unrelated to PIE *cough* I mean, PAI.. but definitely related to Akismet. Assuming the behaviour is replicated in any blog utilising Akismet and not just WP blogs, this will probably go into the moderation queue... please 'un-spam' me, to help Akismet learn that I am not a spammer.

    Merci :)

Done... Hopefully my communication to Akismet works and it will have learnt that you're not spam. I know that the communication works from Akismet (i.e., it will tell me if a comment is spam or not) but I've never tried to send to it. Should work though, I did exactly what it said to do on the Akismet API site thing.

Comment again and keep doing so until it learns :)

You just want more comments! :P

I've commented 3 times on Karl's blog, and several times on other WordPress blogs, and still no luck. The article I've linked to in my updated blog post stated that 3 non-spam comments was enough for him.

Yeah I know, I read it... I have a feeling though that maybe he was only blacklisted once... If my theory is correct (that some idiot has been going round blacklisting you because omgzusuck) then you've most likely been blacklisted several times :(

Akismet does an excellent job of catching spam, I've only ever had 3 spam comments get through it onto my old WP blog. This blog is too new to have any spam (they haven't found the comment script yet, heh) but I thought I'd implement spam stuff before it got anywhere (because it will - it always does).

But I was clicking around reading associated articles on this and Matt himself stated "Each of these relies on the fact that the only input Akismet uses is its feedback mechanism, which is really just one of thousands of variables." ..which means even if some n00b was forging my details to mark me as spam, or some other petty little scheme, Akismet's supposed smarts would be able to work that out and HELP me out!

Sucky :( I can only assume that Akismet will take its time over this...

I think I need to disable approved commenters from being checked for spam. Though there have been a couple of intelligent spammers copying details from previous comments so hmmm

We *may* be getting somewhere.. I just left a comment and ended up in the WP moderation queue, but NOT Akismet. That said, the same person was reporting problems with actual spam not being sent to Akismet so it might have been a one-off. :Z

*sigh* The sad thing is, if someone has done this deliberately the only person they're inconveniencing is themselves. If this continues I will simply refrain from commenting on people's blog — that saves me time.

No, comment with a different email address and/or leave TT as your site. It won't think it's you that way...

But why should I have to f... about with my identity for the sake of some n00b? :P (Assuming any of the people with a grudge against me have the brains to do that..)

Just tried it with my TT links and it made no difference. This is probably because it goes on UA, IP, etc too..

Jem, if it's still doing it in a few days after people have unspammed you it might be worth emailing the Powers That Be and asking... as apparently false positives are "extremely rare and we watch them closely"... uh-huh (although I'm sure you've already considered this, heh)

Yeah, that's my next plan of attack, although I wanted to wait a day since pinpointing the issue. I must have been blacklisted mid-last week though so you'd think they'd have picked up on it if they watch as closely as they claim. Pft.

They probably don't watch closely at weekends or something. Or maybe the close watching has turned to hacky WP. Or ... something.
