Teaching an old(ish) dog ... old tricks

I'm trying to re-learn to use Photoshop, because I haven't used it since 2004 when the current version was CS or CS2. As you can see, this layout looks like ... well, something not very nice ... and I need to make a better one. This layout will have been up for a year come next week and I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of it. I've been using Paint Shop Pro for the last few years because Photoshop was so overpriced, but as nice as PSP is, it's just not cutting it any more. I've currently got the CS4 trial of PS and am hoping I can re-learn what I lost over the past 6 years before I consider whether I've got the £600 Adobe want for their software (and no, I'm not going to crack it/torrent it/keygen it/get it illegally. I have my reasons but that's for another post :P ).

So. Not only do I need inspiration, I also need your help: tutorials! Photoshop CS4 is very different to CS or whatever it is I used last and I'm lost. I've been pointed towards Tutorial9 and psd.tuts+ which are both very good but I'm open to other options too :)

Two other blogs that find amazing quality tutorials on are Chris Spooner's blog (http://www.blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/) and Veerle Pieter's blog (http://veerle.duoh.com/). :)

I would suggest paying several thousand dollars to learn Photoshop like I do. :P

I'm kidding, I don't learn a lot in that class. So, really, just play around. That's how I learnt. :)

I don't see why you'd need CS4. I use CS and it works fine o.O

For that matter, you might want to check out Photoshop Elements. It is SO much cheaper than the full PS and I don't see much that's missing from it myself. There are a couple of things I've run in to that aren't there, like actions, but I personally don't use them anyway so I'm not bothered. But it might be worth it to you to give that a try and see if it fits your needs before you do spend a lot of money on the full thing.

I did consider Elements, yeah... I was just trying to get up to speed with the real deal so I could try and maybe use it for something, but Elements is about 1/10th the price so i might go for that instead anyway :)

I really like psdtuts+ for photoshop tuts as well as the ones you've mentioned. :)
