No book or website taught me as much as editing existing scripts. I had a look at different scripts and how they worked, and anything I didn't understand I Googled or looked up on php.net to find out more about it. My first script was pretty much a copy/paste of different parts of other scripts, which I managed to edit a little to my liking. Within 6 months of that, I knew enough to completely rewrite said script (this one - PHPAskIt - in fact) on my own. However, I don't think I know PHP. I know some PHP, enough to be able to do what I want... If someone asked me to write a script for them that did this that and the other, I'd be completely lost.

It's not difficult if you know what you want and how to create it. However, you need to keep at it, and I seem to be slacking a lot with mine :(
...and Jem isn't scary at all, she just pretends to be :P
Oh. Er, I mean, Jem is totally really scary and you must be really nice to her or she'll, um, send her minions. Yes.

...meh-ly. I have no energy to work on it these days... Not that it takes much energy, but still. Oh, and having a job has not helped my free time out much :(

When your CMS is finished, will it be available for download?
No. I don't think it will be useful to anyone but myself and I don't really want to release it anyway :P

Why are you writing your own blog script? Why not just stick with Wordpress?
I love WordPress, don't get me wrong. The thing is though that it's kind of bloated... It's full of needless JavaScript and AJAX stuff that I never use. I don't use the themes either, so they're just another bunch of (empty) redundant folders on my server.
Plus, WP's security has been debated recently.
I'm writing my own because I want to, because I want a challenge. I may or may not end up using it - it depends if a) I can finish it, and b) if I can make it work properly. At the moment, its functionality sort of resembles that of WP, but without the JS and without the bloat that I don't need.

When and how did you learn PHP?
When: Er... It's ongoing. How: I picked it up bit by bit, from editing scripts and seeing how they worked. I bought a couple of books but they didn't really teach me that much.

Can you recommend some good books for beginner learners of PHP?
I only have two books: Teach Yourself PHP in 24 Hours by Matt Zandstra and PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Websites by Larry Ullman. Neither of them really taught me anything - most of what I learned I learned from looking at other scripts and by looking at php.net.

I have this version because I wrote the script and can update it whenever I feel like it. Version 3.1 will be available when it is ready. For now I'm just using it here to test it.
And no, I can't send you a copy.

Where did you get this script?
I wrote it. :P It's called PHPAskIt, and you can download a copy from my scripts section.
